Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy
Ingredients
For the Hamburger Steaks:
1 pound (450g) ground beef
1/4 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 cup milk
1 egg
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Salt and pepper to taste
For the Onion Gravy:
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 medium onions, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Hamburger Steaks
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
Mix until all ingredients are well combined.
Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into oval patties.
Step 2: Cook the Hamburger Steaks
Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, until browned and cooked through.
Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
Step 3: Make the Onion Gravy
In the same skillet, add butter and sliced onions. Sauté the onions over medium heat until they are soft and golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir well to coat.
Gradually add beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 5 minutes.
Step 4: Combine and Serve
Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning some gravy over each patty.
Cover and simmer for an additional 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
Serve hot with mashed potatoes or rice, and enjoy!
Cooking Tips
For extra flavor, add a splash of balsamic vinegar to the gravy.
If you prefer a thicker gravy, mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water and add it to the gravy, stirring until thickened
